Remembrance Crosses of Oltenia Region, Romania
Remembrance crosses in my mother’s native village of Oltenia. Oltenia is a historic and geographical region of Romania situated between the foothills of the Carpathian mountains and the Danube, west of the river Olt (western part of Wallachia). It is a land of ancient spirituality and the remembrance crosses are an old local tradition. When someone dies, people renovate a footbridge or a well, and set up two crosses for the deceased, one for remembrance, and the other one for forgiveness of sins. (pictures taken April 2012)
