A big thank you to Cristina, who took us on a tour of Bucharest last Saturday. The tour was conducted in a professional manner and was well-structured. It consisted of three parts: firstly, the Village Museum, which looked at Romania’s earlier history through rural communities, secondly, the city centre and Bucharest’s 20th century history and finally the giant folly, the Palace of Parliament. Cristina patiently described the salient events. Her answers were always thoughtful and clear. We didn’t feel we were being rushed. She spoke frequently of her personal experiences, i.e. her family and her upbringing in Bucharest and in the countryside, and also of her impressions of the dramatic 1989 revolution and its immediate aftermath.
Cristina is up-to-date with the current affairs and explained in detail the background to the recent political upheavals and the scenario for the upcoming presidential elections. We enjoyed the day immensely. Given the fine, sunny weather of mid-October, we were lucky to see the best side of the city and have retained some very fond memories.
