Bucharest’s Churches (40) » Manea Brutaru Church (1787) Bucharest

September 16, 2013

Remarkable iconostasis (the screen decorated with icons dividing the sanctuary from the nave in Eastern Orthodox churches) richly decorated in Brancovan style.
The iconostasis was originally brought from the now gone Metochion of the Episcopal See of Ramnic (Metocul Episcopiei Ramnicului), built in 1764 by the Great Ban Mihai Cantacuzino (not to be confused with the Great Sword-Bearer Mihail Cantacuzino (1640-1716), founder of Coltea Church and Hospital). The Metochion was demolished in 1864, and on the same site it was later raised the Romanian Athenaeum.
