A legend has it that a shepherd named “Bucur” (hence the name “Bucur-esti”) once founded a settlement on the banks of the Dambovita River, midway between the Carpathians Mountains and the Danube. The romantic legend linked the foundation of the city of Bucharest to the pastoral tradition of the Romanian people.
