Bucharest Communist Tour (6 hrs) » The House of Free Press, formerly “House of the Spark”, a Stalinist Era Symbol

Casa Scanteii - "House of the Spark", a Stalinist Era Symbol

Built in 1957 in the characteristic style of the large-scale Soviet projects, this edifice was intended to be a true emblem of the newly established communist regime. Popularly known as the “House of the Spark” after the name of the official gazette (“organ”) of the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party, it was made for the purpose of bringing together under the same roof all Bucharest’s press and publishing houses. It is the only building in Bucharest featuring the “Hammer & Sickle”, Red Star and other communist insignia carved into medallions adorning the façade.
